FAQ for New Parents

Our season starts Monday August 15th, 2011

To all our New Parents:
Here are the questions I get asked most frequently. Remember the first two weeks are the hardest. Please encourage your son to stick with it.

Some of the parents whose sons have been with us for several years asked me to share their  "Emergency Supply" list. These are the things that Football parents carry with them during the season - Blanket, clean pair of clothing including dry socks and sneakers, extra mouth guard, several rain ponchos and stretchy winter gloves available at the Dollar Store, large plastic bags for your car seats on rainy days when your son is covered in mud and an extra coat for when the day starts out warm and then it turns cold.

Registration will be held throughout the summer months and you will be advised of the dates through a mailing and/or flyer. All players must be registered before they are allowed to pick up equipment.

FAQs

When do we start the season? - Our practices begin August 15th, 2011 and our last game is the Turkey Bowl played on Thanksgiving Day. For all you turkey lovers, do not fear as games are done around Noon. Click here for Schedule. If we have enough players to form two teams, the game day may differ for team 2. Team 2 may play on Sunday, or, on Saturday at a different time.

When is practice and how many days does the team practice? -  Practice varies - Please see Welcome link for practice schedule or click here. Always read your emails during the season as you may receive an update via email. However, we will also call (this is why we need good numbers including your cell). We have a Varsity, Junior Varsity and Flag contact person. For Safety reasons, we will never leave a player on the field and we will wait until someone arrives. We ask you to respect the coaches' time and not be late picking up your child from practice. Flag Football has their own practice schedule - please see your coach.

What if it rains during practice? - Everybody gets wet. But if the rain is very heavy, or if there is a chance of lightning, the coach may "call" (end) practice. That is why we need everyone's phone number - we will never leave a player on the field - we will call you to come and pick them up early. However, be proactive about this and keep your Football phone listing with you at all times (this will be given out on 8/15) just in case it rains. Do not call the coaches, instead, call the number shown for "Practice contact" for an update. All Flag players will be called as well.

What if I have problems getting my son to practice? - You will be given a phone listing with all players on your son's team and their phone numbers. Please make sure you reach out to another parent who may be able to help you out. Here is a suggestion - one parent drops off and another parent picks up, or one does one week and someone does the next week. However you decide to arrange it, please do not abuse other parents (especially as gas is so expensive) by having them take your player everywhere. However, if you do not drive and someone offers to help you, please offer them some gas money. We do double up going back and forth from games. All of our parents are FANtastic and we usually all work this out by the second week. If your son will miss practice due to an illness you must call one of the coaches. We will look for you and call if you do not show on the field.

When are our games and how long do they last
VARSITY and JUNIOR VARSITY CYO games are every Saturday, with the exception of one or two, or if we experience severe weather and must re-schedule. The Varsity usually plays first followed by the Junior Varsity. IF we have a night game the JV plays first. Each game is 4 quarters and they usually last one hour.
FLAG Football has their own schedule and meet times which will be posted. Most of Flag games vary depending on team and field availability. Each player will be given a handout for game day procedures that week prior to the game.

What do I need to buy? -
VARSITY AND JUNIOR VARSITY - All parents are responsible to buy their son a Football girdle with girdle pads (do not buy the pads that go into the pants as we supply them), a cup, chin strap, football cleats (cleats cannot have removable spikes - all cleats must be stationary and part of the shoe), mouth guard (must not be clear and the mouth guard must be attachable) and a practice jersey. If you have none of these now, the cost will be about $100.00 as cleats are expensive. Each year is less expensive as you will already have most of these items already. We will supply the practice & game jersey, socks, practice & game pants and the pads that go in them, helmet, shoulder pads and belt. You must return only what we supply - you keep the items you bought for the following year. If you do not return the CYO equipment you will be charged a replacement fee. We will collect your son's Game Day Jersey after each game. We will wash his game jersey and return it clean the night before the game. If your son loses his jersey you will be responsible to replace it.
FLAG - you only need to purchase the cleats and mouthpiece described above. We supply the flags and Jersey. Flag is a non contact football. We ask that if your player takes the flags home with him by mistake that you make sure that these are returned. All players should dress appropriately for the weather in sweats or shorts. If your son is a St Cyril student, please dress in the standard gym uniform. If your son is a sister school player you can purchase burgundy sweats, however, this is not a requirement as Flag payers wear their jersey over their clothes.

Do you have a payment plan? - Our fee is $110.00 for Varsity and Junior Varsity and we refund $20.00 when you return the CYO equipment at the end of the year. Our fee is $40.00 for Flag and there is no refund. All payment plans must be approved by Coach Borrelli and must be paid in full before September 8th, 2007. Registrations will go out in the mail in June so there is time to make arrangements as soon as you receive the paperwork

What if my son does not like it? - You will receive a full refund providing you notify us before the first league game of 9/15/2007. All CYO uniform equipment must be returned in order to qualify for a refund.

Can I help? - Yes, and all parents are expected to assist in some way. The registration form has an area for this. Each family is  expected to do one Saturday of Snack Stand duty. Our Football Moms will come around at the beginning of the year with the schedule and ask you for your preference of which Saturday is best for you. Here is how it works - if your son is a Varsity player, you will be scheduled in during the Junior Varsity game and vice versa, so that each parent can watch their son play. We also need Dads to hold the markers on the sidelines. Hey Dads - this is a great way to get up close and personal. We just ask that all marker volunteers not shout out loudly for their son and distract the referees. We also need someone to video non-rain games (we have a video camera) and take photographs for non rain games (we have a camera). We also run the snack stand at all Flag games so we do expect Flag parents to staff this on a rotating basis.

How do I address any problems or questions I may have? - Please see one of the Football Moms first or you may speak to the coach after a practice or game, but never during. We also ask that no parent cross the perimeter field line at any time to speak to the coaches. This Web site will answer a lot of the questions you may have, provide an emergency schedule to print out and to view our Snack Stand Schedule.

Is my son guaranteed playing time? - This is a competitive league and playing time is not guaranteed. It will depend on effort, preparedness, skill level and determination. That being said, we will make every effort to see that he gets playing time. However, Football is a contact sport and all players need to be ready and prepared

How do I sign up? Registration forms will be posted on the Web as well as mailed to everyone that attends our camps.

Should my son eat before  a game? - We ask that your son eat lightly two hours before practice or games.

What is my son's grades are falling? - Call the coach and allow him to assist you before it gets to the point where the player must be pulled. He will speak with your son and explain that he must maintain good grades to play Football.

Are there any special events during the season? - Yes, we have a Parent's Meeting in the beginning of the season and we also have a Homecoming Game each year.
