Hello Everyone in St. Cyril Parish! I am writing to thank everyone for the sympathy you showed to me on the death of my mother. It would be impossible to thank everyone individually for your kind sympathies, but it was and is very much appreciated. Regards, Father Gerry Burns Rev. Gerard Burns, Achill Sound, Achill, Co. Mayo IRELAND. |
A MESSAGE TO ST. CYRIL PARISH
"This is Fr. Burns calling from Achill Island, Co. Mayo Ireland saying Hello to everyone! This is my new parish. I am here two weeks and trying to settle in. I want to thank all of you for being so generous to me before I left. It would be almost impossible to thank everyone personally, but I will never forget you. My 4 years at St. Cyril was a joy and a time I will always treasure. Words could never express my thankfulness. All I want to say is "TANK YOU"."
Mothers' Day 2003 was another busy day here. The
Legion of Mary held their annual Mothers' Day tribute to Mary; The Home &
School Association held their annual flower and cake sale, and we also
were able to say our farewell to Father Gerry Burns. After four years
serving us at Saint Cyril's and the Archdiocese, he will return to his native
Ireland this week. He will be missed. Hopefully he will send his new
address to our guestbook when he receives his new assignment in County Mayo.

| Along with
being Associate Pastor at St. Cyril of Alexandria, Father is currently working with the
Irish Immigrant Community in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and surrounding communities. A native of Westport County Mayo, Ireland, Father is the oldest of a family of four. He worked as a priest in the Diocesan Boarding School, St. Jarlath's College, Tuam County Galway. After that, he spent two years in the Irish Immigrant Community in Boston. Since 1990, he has been in parish work and now begins his new adventure in Philadelphia. |
| I arrived in Philadelphia on July 29th 1999.
I worked in this ministry in Boston in the late eighties, so I knew what I was letting myself in for. The Philadelphia situation would be different from Boston in that things are scattered out a lot more. People had said to me before I came: Was there much need for this ministry now that emigration had stopped? Emigration hasn't stopped. People are still emigrating; maybe not in the same numbers, but it still happens. This area is full of young people from the six counties and Donegal in particular. The big problem that I see at the moment are the people who are illegal or undocumented, and where this is going. Our ministry is worthwhile, at times it is hard to see what you are doing; the rest we will leave in God's hands... GB |

Father has talked a couple of groups from Ireland into performing in our Social Hall as part of their American Tours. |
|
Realtai Corafinne performed in our Social Hall on Thursday July 18, 2002 as part of their American Tour. Coming from the village of Corofin a few miles north of Galway, this group comprises a host of champions- musicians, singers, and dancers- all displaying a variety of talents and keeping alive the traditions of their Gaelic culture. |

Jomac Productions came to our Social Hall October 4, 2000 during their American Tour
