Fr. Dominic Tran Minh Duc
Pastor, St. Cyril of Alexandria Parish
Father Dominic Tran Minh Duc was born in the city of Saigon in the country of Vietnam. He was the oldest son in a family of five children – three boys and two girls. He lived through the Vietnam War between South Vietnam and Communist North Vietnam. In 1975 South Vietnam fell to the Communists. Father Dominic lived under the oppressive Communist rule for awhile, but this oppression conflicted with religious freedom. The Communists closed seminaries, and controlled the Catholic Church and schools. Worship was government controlled. Permission had to be granted from the government for church programs, making them in essence, government programs.
Before the fall of Saigon, Father was in the Seminary preparing to become a priest. After this, he had no chance to continue his studies to be a priest. He endured this oppressive rule for four years.
Father finally escaped by boat in June of 1979. He fled his country alone and spent four days and four nights on the ocean before landing on an uninhabited island. Father became a refugee in the United Nations Refugee Program and was resettled in the United States after 16 months in a refugee camp. He learned English and entered St. Charles Seminary. After eight years, he was ordained in May of 1990.
Father Dominic’s first assignment was at St. Laurence Parish in Highland Park where he was stationed for seven years. Then, he was sent to St. Aloysius Parish in Pottstown for eight years followed by a dual assignment at St. Francis DeSales and St. Bernadette’s for three years. He was appointed the eighth pastor of St. Cyril’s in June of 2009.
Another of Father Dominic’s brothers escaped Vietnam, also by boat and also by himself. He ended up in England when he was rescued by an English Merchant Ship and was able to get the rest of the family out and resettled in England where they have lived since 1984. Father Dominic’s mother died there five years ago. However, his father, who is 81 years old, still resides in England with Father’s two brothers and one sister. Another sister lives in California with her husband after moving here five years ago due to her husband’s business.
Father says, “All my life I wanted to be a priest, to serve God, to serve His people and to help people to become closer to God.” His mission is to help people realize that everything in our lives is a gift from God and never to take things for granted. The motto of Father Dominic’s life is: “Everything is grace.”
A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 08-09-2009
The rain, lightning and thunder added to the great blessings for our parish at last Sunday’s Liturgy as we celebrated the Thanksgiving Mass to our Almighty God and the installation of me as your pastor.
I would like to thank Bishop Robert Maginnis, Father George Majoros, Vicar, all priests, deacons and religious that were here to help celebrate as a family. I was so appreciative of their presence as we begin our work together as a family.
From the bottom of my heart I would like to say to all of you a BIG AND GREAT THANK YOU for all you did to make such a wonderful moment for my ministry. I am so grateful to receive your love and your hospitality. It is awesome! A special thank you to Maryanne LaMonaca, our Music Director, Rose Wells and Doris Shank, Deacon Jim Dalton and our sacristans, Steve Love and Sean Shank, Sister Barbara Montague, our School Principal, the students, Mary Kate Murphy our Director of Religious Education, our CYO and Home & School representatives, our ushers and lectors and Val Kubach for coordinating the reception after Mass.
I would like to especially thank Father James Olson, the Rectory Staff of Mary Lou Love, Bernadette Hilferty, Val Kubach, Mary Kate Murphy, and Bob Burns and his men who did a great job of setting up the hall on Saturday night and mopping up the little flood on Sunday morning. Thank you to all who brought baked goods for the wonderful reception.
I was so grateful that many of my friends from previous assignments were here as well from St. Laurence Parish, St. Aloysius Parish in Pottstown, St. Francis deSales Parish, St. Bernadette Parish and the Vietnamese Community.
Your love and prayers made Sunday the most memorable day in my life. May God through the intercession of our patron saint, St. Cyril, bestow upon you and your family all His graces and Blessings.
God bless you – keep the faith – and say a little prayer for me.
Your brother in Christ,
Fr. Dominic
